One of the most beautiful seasonal foods is Hwajeon (화전), a traditional Korean flower rice cake made with edible blossoms. It represents the taste, scent, and spirit of Korean spring.

What is Hwajeon? | 화전이란 무엇인가
Hwajeon is a traditional Korean dessert made by flattening glutinous rice dough and pan-frying it with edible flowers on top. It is often translated as Korean Flower Pancake or Korean Traditional Dessert.
Historically, Hwajeon was enjoyed during Samjinnal (삼짇날), a spring festival when people went outdoors, picked flowers, and celebrated the season.
화전은 찹쌀 반죽 위에 꽃을 올려 구운 한국의 전통 떡으로, 봄을 대표하는 음식입니다.
Ingredients for Hwajeon
- 200g Glutinous Rice Flour
- 10–15 Azalea Flowers
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- A pinch of Salt
- Cooking Oil
- 120ml Water

How to Make Hwajeon
- Mix glutinous rice flour with warm water to form dough
- Shape into small round pieces and flatten
- Heat oil in a pan and place the dough
- Add flowers on top and cook on low heat
- Sprinkle sugar before serving
Tip: Keep the heat low to preserve the color and shape of the flowers.
- Use only edible azalea flowers
- Avoid rhododendron (toxic)
- Keep dough soft but not sticky
- Cook slowly on low heat
